The UK aviation sector has reached a significant milestone following confirmation that Gatwick Airport's Northern Runway expansion can now proceed after the Court of Appeal dismissed a legal challenge against the project.
From 2030, Gatwick Airport is expected to accommodate up to 100,000 additional flights every year, supporting an estimated 13 million additional passengers annually. The increased capacity will enhance access to more than 200 destinations already served by the airport, providing greater choice for passengers and creating new opportunities for airlines to expand services.
Job opportunities at Gatwick Airport
One of the most significant benefits of Gatwick's expansion is the impact it is expected to have on employment across the South East and the wider UK economy.
The project is forecast to create around 14,000 new jobs, spanning a wide range of sectors including construction, engineering, project management, logistics, technology, aviation operations, security, retail, hospitality and professional services.
During the construction phase, businesses throughout Gatwick's supply chain are expected to benefit from increased demand, creating opportunities for contractors, suppliers and specialist service providers. Once operational, the expanded runway capacity will support long-term employment growth both at the airport and across the wider aviation ecosystem.
Beyond direct job creation, major infrastructure projects such as this often generate additional employment through the wider economy. Increased passenger numbers can drive demand for hotels, transport services, tourism businesses and local amenities, creating further opportunities for workers and businesses across the region.
The expansion also presents an opportunity to invest in future skills. As the aviation industry continues to evolve through digital transformation and sustainability initiatives, demand for skilled workers in areas such as sustainable aviation fuel, data and technology, engineering and green infrastructure is expected to grow.

Balancing growth with sustainability
While airport expansion remains a topic of debate, the government has has already confirmed new investment aimed at accelerating the transition towards greener aviation.
This includes a £219 million fun to support the production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in the UK, and a £43 million fund to advance hydrogen-powered and electric flight technologies
These investments form part of a broader strategy to position the UK as a global leader in sustainable aviation while supporting future growth and careers in this emerging sector.
